http://www.ted.com Simon Sinek presents a simple but powerful model for how leaders inspire action, starting with a golden circle and the question “Why?” His examples include Apple, Martin Luther King, and the Wright brothers — and as a counterpoint Tivo, which (until a recent court victory that tripled its stock price) appeared to be struggling.

Harold Westrich says:

I like the examples he gives, but the example of TEVO….works…. but
…… think about this – You just created a device that renders
ADVERTISING ineffective ! ! ! ! DUHHH! ! ! every corporation/politician
that advertises on television is going to be… A(pissed at you …B(Trying
to shut you down ….C( wishing you would go out of business.

The media is the number one tool that our ruling class uses to control the
working class. There is no way they or any advertisers are going to let a
thing like TEVO shut down the control system.
CORPORATIONS that fit A, B, or C, above are going to immediately start
planning ways to shut TEVO down. … they succeeded ! ! ! !

Digital TV…it’s still not happened, or all TV program stations offer,
would be on demand and with the option to remove adds!

TIVO…I would get it, if I still would be using TV! It sounds great, to
have more control!
But the base product TV is still way too 2000 and late, in my eyes!

Anny Time says:

Great speech and very interesting. I learned the law of diffusion and
innovation last semester but my professor didn’t say anything about the
“Why” whilst the idea that people buy why you do it is so important.
P.S. Came here from +Alexis Ohanian ‘s speech for +Google for Entrepreneurs

Scott Hamilton says:

There’s an interesting correlation in fiction writing. I believe it was
Tolstoy that said if you begin with a distinct character in mind, you will
ultimately produce a stereotypical character; if you start with a
stereotypical character, you ultimately arrive at a cliche. Likewise,
companies that start off with a reason for their existence that is a
stereotypical one (we exist so our shareholders make money), you arrive at
a cliche – where no one wants to work, and whose products are not
interesting or inspiring.
